Dr. Charles Bucks is, all things considered, an objectively weird guy. He likes piña coladas, getting caught in the rain, and surgically removing body parts out of unsuspecting patients.
Yeah. Told you so. …More on that one in a minute.
While his laid-back, quirky personality can be interpreted as friendly and kind—and, truthfully, he is genuinely both—it does come at a cost: within himself, he battles near-debilitating bursts of anxiety and paranoia. For a man who is intelligent and perceptive, Bucks sure doesn’t like to address his own issues. Instead, he prefers to pass them off as “self-preservation”; after all, when you’re in a black-market business, sometimes a bit of worry is necessary, right?
Brought up in the slums of Japantown, CA, (N)USA, Bucks took his education very seriously from a young age. He even went so far as to learn Japanese and study philosophy, all on his own. Despite being in a fractured, poor household, the world around him filled with senseless violence, he decided to walk a more noble path of studying medicine and helping others. He excelled at it; he always did.
For every angel on one shoulder, there’s a devil on the other.
Bucks was only 15 years old when he first discovered the thrill of picking apart human bodies and experimenting with cyberware (technological implants). In the alleyway aside his ratty apartment, a local banger had been sliced to shreds and left to rot among the garbage. Bucks took the liberty of sneaking out at night to inspect the corpse. It took little further guesswork to realize that’d dealing in cyberware and black market organ trade could be very lucrative business. It could get him, and his family, out of the slums.
You know what the road to hell is paved with, right?
Fast-forward a decade and he’s a fully-licensed medical doctor and Ripperdoc. Though he always preferred to operate in the inner-city slums—despite growing older and wiser, he decided that these places will always be where he feels most comfortable—Bucks’ medical prowess begins catching the undercover eye of some big-biz executives. A man of opportunity, he forms partnerships and supply chains to and from his clever hands. As it turns out, slummy city-living works to Bucks’ advantage: most people can effectively vanish without a trace, caught up in violence and crimes that are rampant in the overcrowded area. It is much easier this way—though still not guaranteed or an exact science—to access a constant supply of organs, tissue, and cyberware.
Though he is not ill-tempered, Bucks is not one to be toyed around with when it comes to his personal business; he has no qualms about threatening others and strapping them into his surgery suite. When it comes to engaging with authority, however, this is where Bucks’ strengths do not lie. His anxieties well up and leave him a sweaty, stuttering mess when confronted, and this unfortunately makes him an easy target for being manhandled.
The anxiety has a limit. Bucks is also a great actor in a pinch.
When necessary, he’s great under pressure.
Thus, as expected, one wealthy big-biz takes advantage of this weak spot by handing out a demand slip: supply me with certain organs and cyberware, and I won’t report you to law enforcement or have you hourly beaten within an inch of your life. It doesn’t pay as well as it should, considering, but Bucks lives a comfortable enough lifestyle to actively comply. He’s so skilled at it, in fact, that even those around and close to him are none the wiser about his peculiar…extracurricular activities. Besides, he gets his kicks by literally picking people apart, too. What more could he want?
So…he’s a victim of circumstance?
…Nah.
He is a perfectly disgusting man.
He knows this and he is okay with it.
And this is how Bucks lives his daily life. In his clinic, both helping his clientele and performing lethal surgeries on others in the basement. Being a loyal friend. Living well, eating well, and enjoying his lifestyle of intertwined work and pleasure.

Bucks is a licensed Ripperdoc. Anyone may visit or call upon him for routine or emergency medical care, and for cyberware upgrades and installation. Despite his covert, shady dealings, he is far from the same caliber as back-alley docs in Night City. He is skilled at what he does and, in certain circumstances, can offer the best rates on the market for cyberware.
Bucks is a canon Cyberpunk 2077 character. He can be visited in-game at his office in Watson, in the northern section of Kabuki. There, you can buy and install cyberware and chat with him. Bucks and his office are also involved in a side gig.

Multiverse:
As a general surgeon, his intelligence and technical abilities are the most impressive. Using his own cybernetic fingers, medical equipment and software, he is able to easily diagnose and treat or kill his patients.

Equipment
Bucks’ primary equipment, including during combat, are medical tools and blades. In particular, he prefers the practicality of scalpels and knives. For more sticky circumstances, he relies on a semi-automatic firearm. His pistol of choice is a “smartgun”, the A-22B Chao.

Bio:
Known by the locals as “Bucks”, or simply “Doc”, he owns and operates a private medical clinic just off Carlin. There, he offers everything from emergency medical assistance, to routine physicals, to cups of coffee for those who just stop in to chat on the dreary days. He is affiliated with the local hospital and occasionally performs procedures/surgeries there.
Bucks claims that he moved to Bendpine to escape the roar of the big city in which he was born and raised, but his true motives are constantly under question. He has a notable reputation of being odd but kind, and he is a fantastic doctor, yet some say he’s the kind of guy you do not want to meet in the street at night—this, despite him never outwardly hurting a fly. …Or so most know, at least.
Truth is, he is working in Bendpine to escape the more unsightly rumors that he’d left behind in the grimy outskirts of Los Angeles. Involved in medicinal black market dealings and cybernetic prosthesis—and even rumored to be a cannibal!—Bucks seeks to make a new life for himself in the eerie confines of the town. He himself is strange and weird, and has a penchant for the horrors, so when choosing a new place to live and practice, it was Bendpine that first came to mind. In his spare time, he enjoys urbex and ghost hunting, activities that both keep him active and stretch the limits of his logic-focused psyche.
